Today I now have $15,181.55 in the account I'm saving to pay my ex-husband. This is in lieu of alimony. I owe him 32K, but this is almost half and $15K seemed like a true bear to reach, so I'm happy.
Only $2K to go before I will be down to owing him $15K. At that point, if he demands payment, I'll be able to take out a personal loan at my credit union (they fund $15K personal loans). While I'm not wild about getting a new loan, I do want to feel I have a chance to get him paid off without borrowing against my 401K.
I also have $906 in my short term account, $3000 in my yearly bill payment fund and $5778.00 in my emergency fund. Unfortunately I only have $2K in an ira, but I'm working on it.
Met a Savings goal!!!!

Now, uh, you don't have to answer this of course, but... how did you end up owing him alimony? And why is it a lump sum?

Broken Arrow - I live in California, its a No-Fault Divorce State. This means your husband can take off with all the money in the bank and move to Salt Lake with a Bimbo and you still owe him half of everything. Because I work and he doesn't, I would have also owed him alimony, instead I opted for a lump sum of 60% of the appraised value of our home. Fortunately, home values went way down. So I owe him $66K. I refinanced and gave him $34K, but I'm working on paying the rest.
He has a back problem and heart problems, although his heart doctor told him he could go back to work (and he worked out and walked and things). He was enjoying playing on the computer all day and wouldn't try to find a job.
Anyway I figure 60% of the home's value is less than paying him $800 to $1200 a month for the rest of my life. So I'm actually fortunate.

But yeah, I completely agree that you've made the right financial decision here. Still, I can't even stand the IDEA of this. It's like you're rewarding him for doing something bad to you! It's insane!
I fought really hard to make sure that didn't happen to me and my ex, but at least my state law favored me (being the legal victim).

I agree with you but think of this. I'm better off with him gone. He was acting irrational and violent.
I think in another state, he would have tried to find a way to kill me so he could be with his "true love", so I'm really fortunate. So maybe this is for the best.
Thanks so much for your comments and friendship - This is such a nice group.

But yeah, whatever it takes to get rid of this guy. At least he's out of your life for good!
