I missed a mortgage payment

May 19th, 2011 at 04:22 pm

I have never done this before, but somehow I missed a mortgage payment.

ARRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG.

Maybe I was having a senior moment? Brain damage?

I have a confession to make. Even though I am good at saving, I haven't been able to reconcile my checking account since the divorce. I'm always showing I have way less money than the bank (which I guess is good from the Bank's point of view).

I think it has to do with the emotions of him closing out all our bank accounts and leaving with all the money.

Anyway I paid the payment and the late fee but I feel like I either am losing my mind or 5 years old with no right to run around managing my finances.

Aiiiiiii.

Have a great day guys.

It happens to the best of us. My first recommendation would be setting up automatic payments with the mortgage company. I've been doing this for years without any issues.

Or could you set up an email reminder? I use my email account calender to schedule rare bills and the system sends me an email two days prior. This really helps me with our property taxes.

    Best wishes!!

I have a bill book. It is a simple composition book wherein I list each bill and depository account which I have, 1 month per page. I highlight off each bill as I pay it. It is a great visual tool which really works for me.

It's time to take the bull by the horns and get that checking account balanced. You can do it!

Okay, so if this is your first time missing a payment, try calling the bank and explain it was an oversight and that you've never done this before, and would they please waive the late fee this one time as a courtesy. It's worth a try!

Anyone would feel traumatized by your experience. Now you have your money and he can't grab it and go so you can feel safer.
It really helps to use on-line banking so that you can check your balance anytime you like 24/7. you can even pay bills on-line with their super secure system when you feel comfortable with that idea.

I also think you should call the bank and ask the late fee be reimbursed since you have paid up. It isn't good to have that late fee on your record.

I agree with the suggestion above to set up an email reminder... anyone can lose track of things once in a while, but if you have the insurance of a regular reminder, then that will help lead to a preventive measure. Don't beat yourself up over it, you will be fine!
